This morning, we joined Columbus Business First for a killer event that brought together the most influential female business leaders in Central Ohio.

We also went behind the scenes with Lori Gillett, CEO of Corna Kokosing, for a live taping of the Women of Influence podcast. Her mentorship philosophy left us impressed, while her general warmth and strength as a female business leader left us inspired.

Literal jet lag (Jamie) and mom-jet lag (Andrea) didn’t stop us from meeting some of the most powerful female executives in Columbus, Ohio from bank presidents to CEOs, venture capitalists, and even an opera singer-turned-diversity and improv mogul who we have adopted as our new spirit guide.

Takeaways included life hacks like the travel steamer (because who wants to maneuver the dangers of an unknown hotel iron?) and our favorite nuggets of female CEO wisdom, straight from their lips to your screen.

5 Tips for Being a Badass Boss Lady

  1. Cultivate Relationships: Get out there. Get out from behind your desk and interface with other like-minded human beings. Network if you will, or invite an inspirational higher-up to grab a glass of wine. There are always connections to be made and something to be learned from both directions.
  2. Mentorship Works Both Ways: When you connect with a leader, remember that the relationship is cyclical. Mentorship is not a one-way street. We always have something to exchange from each other at every level. Be prepared to give your own insights, opinions, and add value from your side of the table in exchange for your mentor’s wisdom.
  3. Practice Self-Advocacy: Although you may feel like your team can read your mind, the only way to ensure that you get the support and space you need at work is to discuss clear expectations with yourself and your crew, and set boundaries accordingly.
  4. The Power of 2: Repetition works. Even CEOs can be plagued by misunderstandings in meetings. Bring a team member in the room with you to reiterate what you’ve said for added impact and to ensure that your message is being delivered across the board.
  5. Build a Dream Team: It might take time, but find a team of personal advisors aka truth-tellers. Sometimes, we need people to tell us like it is. So if you can’t find Kenny Rogers, download The Gambler and reach for the next best thing–people you trust and make sure they are straight shooters. A diverse network of consultants helps us stay sharp (and grounded).

If only all Mondays could be this energizing…
